![Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 Box Art]()
It’s been almost two years since Shout! Factory made the public announcement of the Power Rangers 40-DVD Box Set, featuring Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. This announcement rapidly spread as fans pre-ordered their copies from Time Life. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Complete Series box set was a big hit at San Diego Comic Con 2012. The quality of the product and bonus features proved that Shout! Factory was not only creating a Box Set, but more of a piece of history that old and new fans can share with upcoming generations. This was only the beginning as Shout! Factory released Power Rangers Seasons 8-12 last November and the Power Rangers Legacy Collection in February.
Here is my personal review of the Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 DVD Box Set and the bonus features. Shout! Factory has requested that fans don’t upload any screen captures or video footage from the actual DVD product.
You can view all of the photos at Megaforce Cast.
Stay tuned for more updates in this review later this week. Post your requests and questions on RangerCrew.
Product Description
The world’s favorite children’s action-adventure series returns with five more astonishing seasons, including the fan-favorite Power Rangers S.P.D. and the explosive Power Rangers Mystic Force, Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, Power Rangers Jungle Fury and Power Rangers RPM. Join your favorite Rangers as they take on evil unlike anything the universe has ever seen! This limited-edition collection contains all 166 episodes and comes packed with hours of bonus features, including retrospective featurettes celebrating the Power Rangers with brand-new interviews with members of the cast and crew, archival material, and more!
Double Dip
Before I go into the fun details about the Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 Box Set, there has been one popular question for those who have already purchased the Power Rangers Legacy Collection set: To Double Dip or Not to Double Dip? For many fans, there was no doubt that double dipping was not an option. The release of the Power Rangers Legacy Collection set was a controversy issue due to the price and exclusive seasons (Power Rangers Samurai to Megaforce). If you own the Power Rangers Legacy Collection, you already own all of the episodes and bonus features that are included in every single Mega Set.
Unlike the Power Rangers Legacy Collection set, this box set has seasonal volume cases, which included the box art, episode list, and a more convenient way to take the discs out of the case. Although the Legacy Collection 100-page booklet was a beautiful, standalone product, the booklet does not include detailed character and episode summaries as shown in the individual Mega Sets. The seasonal boxes and booklet are stored in the gorgeous Mega Set box, which looks pretty sweet next to the Legacy Helmet. As much as I love the helmet and the great attention that was given to the packaging and booklets, I prefer the Mega Set concept with the added value of the detailed Booklet and seasonal volume boxes.
If you didn’t invest into the Power Rangers Legacy Collection, get the Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 box set to complete the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Power Rangers RPM collection. Pre-order Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 today on Amazon and Shout! Factory. You can also pre-order the Power Rangers Legacy Collection on ShoutFactory.com. Packaging
Box
The Box Set follows the quality bar from the previous three Mega Sets. Shout! Factory placed the individual DVD volumes in a beautifully designed box with a semi-glossy layer. The box can be placed either facing forward or either sides to show a great presentation of the product on the bookshelf. The added shine from the semi-glossy layer provides a slightly rich look to the box. Season logos are shown on the left side.
JC Alcantara, the artistic genius behind the previous Power Rangers Box Sets and the Power Rangers Legacy Collection, continues his beautiful work with the Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 set. Shout! Factory made lithographs of the four box arts as a pre-order bonus for the Power Rangers Legacy Collection. The usage of the Red Rangers matches theme that was set in the previous box sets. The renderings of each Red Ranger is gorgeous. Shout! Factory chose the right guy to create these masterpieces. The swarm of Rangers under the logo is insanely awesome.
The side and back of the box has a similar background color to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Complete Set Box. The back of the box shows a stock photo of Moltor. The other stock photos are decent choices for Power Rangers Jungle Fury and Power Rangers S.P.D. The small list of bonus features include The Voice of A Ranger, Ranger Tales, Pure Titanium, A Web of Fans, and Return of the Ranger.
The bottom of the Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 box has the product specification: NTSC, Region 1, Closed Captioning, and Rated TV-Y7 FY.

Individual Front Covers
The seasonal volume boxes follow the consistent, bright colors and decent stock photos to represent each season. The color ordering for the Box Sets matches the previous box set with Pink, Green, Yellow, Red, Blue, and Black. I would’ve preferred that all of volumes followed the traditional morph color ordering. The stock photos aren’t as appealing as seen in the past sets. My favorite boxes were the Power Rangers Mystic Force, Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, and Power Rangers RPM seasons. The bonus feature cover is a nice improvement from the past ones with the choice of villains (Morticon, Dai Shi, Moltor, and Dynabot from Power Rangers RPM).

Individual Back Covers
The back of the box has a detailed summary of the season with two stock photos. The layout is pretty much the same with the summary on top, large villain stock photo to the left, and the cast on the right. The villain photos are Gruumm (S.P.D.), Morticon (Mystic Force), Flurious (Operation Overdrive), Dai Shi (Jungle Fury), and Tenaya (RPM). The back of the bonus disc has Tenaya and the morphed Rangers.

Individual Side Covers
The side of the individual covers show “5-DVD Set” text, an image of the colored Ranger’s helmet (based on the DVD background color), season name, and season number. The font colors are consistent except for Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, which uses a Black font color for the primary color and Red font color for the season number. This font usage matches the Yellow (Turbo and Wild Force) seasonal boxes from the previous sets.
DVD Sleeves
The DVD sleeves are printed on two sides with the front/back covers on one side and the episodes and season logos on the other side. The font style and color is a fine choice for consistency with the past DVD volumes. Operation Overdrive has its own font color schema (Primary – Yellow and Secondary – Black).

Booklet
Shout! Factory delivers yet another awesome booklet with the detailed episode guide with more information on the seasons. Unlike the previous booklets, this booklet does not have a foreward section. The first page has a Power Rangers S.P.D. photo that was also seen in the Legacy Collection booklet. The booklet continues with the seasonal episode guide featuring the consistent design from the past Mega Set booklets. The primary Rangers, Allies, and Villains get a character bio, includes the characters’ full name, photo, decent description, and the actor/voice actor’s name. A majority of the stock photos have been seen in marketing products, online sites, and the Power Rangers Legacy Collection booklet.
Character Bios
Here is the list of character bios. Some of the character bios are more detailed than others. The Rangers are defined as “The <color> Ranger” in the bios. The word “The” is not necessary to define the character’s name. Omega and Nova Rangers are nice additions to the S.P.D. profiles. Nova Ranger profile mentions Antonia Prebble, who was the voice not the actress of Nova Ranger. Solaris Knight (Daggeron) is not listed in the Mystic Force section.
Power Rangers S.P.D.: The Red Ranger (Jack Landors), The Pink Ranger (Sydney “Syd” Drew), The Blue Ranger (Schuyler “Sky” Tate), The Yellow Ranger (Elizabeth “Z” Delgado), The Green Ranger (Bridge Carson), Omega Ranger (Sam), Nova Ranger, Anubis “Doggie” Cruger, Katherine “Kat”Manx, Emperor Gruum, Mora / Morgana
Power Rangers Mystic Force: The Red Ranger (Nick Russell), The Green Ranger (Xander Bly), The Blue Ranger (Madison Rocco), The Pink Ranger (Vida Rocca), The Yellow Ranger (Chip Thorn), The White Ranger (Udonna), Morticon, Necrolai, Imperious
Power Rangers Operation Overdrive: The Red Ranger (Mackenzie “Mack” Hartford), The Blue Ranger (Dax Lo), The Yellow Ranger (Veronica “Ronny” Robinson), The Black Ranger (Will Aton), The Pink Ranger (Rose Ortiz), The Mercury Ranger (Tyzonn), Andrew Hartford, Spencer Spencer, Flurious, Moltor,
Power Rangers Jungle Fury: The Red Ranger (Casey Rhodes), The Blue Ranger (Theo Martin), The Yellow Ranger (Lily “Chill” Chilman), The Wolf Ranger (Robert “RJ” James), The Rhino Ranger (Dominic “Dom” Hargan), Jerrod, Camille
Power Rangers RPM: The Red Ranger (Scott Truman), The Blue Ranger (Flynn McAllistair), The Yellow Ranger (Summer Landsdown), The Black Ranger (Dillon), The Green Ranger (Ziggy Grover), The Gold and Silver Rangers (Gem and Gemma), Dr. K, Venjix, Tenaya-7

The final page has the DVD Credits for Brian Ward (Producer), Special Consultants (including myself), and the great team that worked on this box set. Fans, who participated in the Fans Colletction bonus feature, are also credited on this page.

DVD Menus
Power Rangers Seasons 1-12 DVDs have the original menus shown on the current Power Rangers Box Sets (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Seasons 4-7, and Power Rangers Seasons 8-12). The DVD menu starts with a quick animation of the season logo transitioning into the primary menu, which resembles the season’s headquarters. The theme song is played in the primary menu. The instrumental theme music is played in the secondary menu. The primary menu has “Play All” and “Episodes” options. The Episodes option links to the Episode secondary menu. After the episode concludes, you are returned back to the Episode Selection menu.
I wasn’t a fan of a few of the menu designs. The S.P.D. menu rendering is expected with the console 3d model. The font and accent color usage are poor design that blend well with this menu. The “Episodes” text is in the secondary menu looks like something out from Microsoft Word. Mystic Force menu was one of my favorite menus with the appropriate usage of 3d models and lighting. Unlike most menus, this menu doesn’t show clips from the show in the monitor. The font used in the Mystic Force is playful and works with the magical theme. Once again, the “Episodes” text in the secondary menu looks terrible. The best part of the Operation Overdrive menu is the background, which has one of the best renderings of a base. The yellow cursor feels out of place because the Play All and Episode options are transformed in a 3D space. The “Episodes” text in the secondary menu looks decent with the font usage but the blue accent color doesn’t work with the theme. The Jungle Fury menu is another one of my favorites with the background design and the clips showing in RJ’s television. This is the only menu where the “Episodes” text feels natural in the secondary menu. I have mixed feelings about the RPM menu. The simplicity of the wall looks amazing with the focus on the monitors, but a zoom out shot of Dr. K’s office would’ve matched the base theme in most of the menus. The secondary menu of the RPM menu is completely out of place with the random “Episodes” design. The Bonus Features disc falls in the same category with the “Episodes” text. This menu would’ve been more effective with a simple rendering of the title.
The following videos show the new DVD Menus (Power Rangers Seasons 13-20). Shout! Factory gave us permission to post a video of the DVD menu.

Bonus Features
The true value in the Shout! Factory Box Sets is the array of bonus features. Brian Ward and his team have worked hard to provide quality bonus features for Power Rangers fans. Pure Titanium, Ranger Tales, and A Web of Fans are my favorite bonus features from this Box Set.
Mad Props!
Mark Richardson and several cast members share their moments working with props in this brand-new bonus feature. This segment is 18 minutes and 47 seconds long.
Rangers On Set!
This feature is dedicated to the sets of Power Rangers. The sets are discussed by season order. Clips from each season are shown throughout the feature. The first featured set, which is my personal favorite, is the Lightspeed Aqua Base. The cast members of Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue share their favorite moments in the Aqua Base set. Erin Cahill and Jason Faunt talk about the Clock Tower set. Jack Guzman is in the Wild Force interview about their base. Pua Magasiva and Sally Martin are in the Ninja Storm interview. Doug Sloan and Kevin Duhaney talk about the various sets (Cyberspace and Mesogog’s Lair) in Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Greg Aronowitz, Alycia Purrott, Brandon Jay MacLaren, and Matt Austin are in the Power Rangers S.P.D. interview. Jason Smith, Anna Hutchison, and David de Lautour are in the Jungle Fury interview about the Loft, Karma Pizza parlor, and Dai Shi temple. David de Lautour mentions about RJ’s chair in the forest. Rose McIver and Ari Boyland are in the RPM interview. The chosen RPM clip has the credits from the beginning of the episode. Erika Fong and Alex Heartman are in the Power Rangers Samurai interview. Azim Rizk talks about Gosei and Command Center in Power Rangers Megaforce. Christina Masterson’s favorite sets were the outdoor sets. After the Megaforce interview, cast members share their least favorite sets. Jessica Rey mentions the fake rain set from the season finale. This segment is 17 minutes and 12 seconds long.
Ranger Tales
Ranger Tales was one of my favorite bonus features in Power Rangers Seasons 8-12. Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 and the Legacy Collection has the following segments: Power Rangers S.P.D., Power Rangers Jungle, and Power Rangers RPM. Power Rangers Mystic Force and Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Ranger Tales are two of many Ranger Tales that weren’t created for the DVDs.
Power Rangers S.P.D. is 45 minutes (and 55 seconds) of pure awesomeness with Greg Aronowitz, Brandon Jay McLaren, Matt Austin, and Alycia Purrott.
Power Rangers Jungle Fury has Jason Smith, Anna Hutchison, and David de Lautour. This segment is approximately 15 minutes and 29 seconds long.
Power Rangers RPM has Ari Boyland and Rose McIver. This segment is approximately 15 minutes and 51 seconds.
Collect ‘Em All!
Got collect ‘em All…Power Rangers! In every box set, Shout! Factory has a bonus feature dedicated to the Power Rangers fandom. In this bonus feature, popular toy collectors show off their amazing Power Rangers collections. The features start with fans morphing into action. This segment is 15 minutes and 52 seconds long.
The S.P.D. Rangers Want You
This bonus feature came from the Power Rangers S.P.D. DVD volumes. This feature is broken into 5 segments: one for each Ranger. The duration for each segments are: Jack Landors (4:31), Z Delgado (4:29), Bridge Carson (4:16), Syd Drew (4:22), and Sky Tate (4:53).

The clips from this bonus feature is from the old RangerSecrets.com site. This figure is broken into 7 segments: Help (28 seconds), How Do You Get Your Suits On? Mystic Force: Forces Of Nature!
This bonus feature came from the Power Rangers Mystic Force “Dark Wish” DVD. This segment is 2 minutes and 44 seconds long.

This bonus feature came from the 5 Power Rangers Operation Overdrive DVD Volumes. The feature is broken into 5 segments: Ranger Bios (5:59), Ranger Enhancements (5:35), Ranger Arsenal (5:16), Ranger Vehicles (4:58), and Ranger Lessons (4:24). You can watch the clips on Megaforce Cast.
Original Promos
How can you not love promos? Shout! Factory added the first promos in the Power Rangers Seasons 8-12 set. Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 and the Legacy Collection have the following promos: 1 Power Rangers S.P.D. Promo, 8 Power Rangers Mystic Force Ranger Promos, and 1 Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Promo. You can see the Operation Overdrive teaser clips on Megaforce Cast.

Mystic Force: The Best at Being Bad – 25 seconds
Mystic Force: The Pink & Blue Rangers – 27 seconds

Operation Overdrive Promo 1 – 28 seconds
Episodes
The video and audio quality meets my expectations based on the previous box sets. These episodes are also the same versions as the ones included on the Power Rangers Legacy Collection.
Final Thoughts
Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 is a subset of the Power Rangers Legacy Collection, but has the added value of the Box Art, Booklet, and individual cases and dvds. If you already own the Power Rangers Legacy Collection, you may not need nor want to invest into the Power Rangers Seasons 13-17 set. This set is tailored more for fans who have invested into the previous box sets as well as fans who may be interested in double dipping for the printed material.
The four Mega Sets, lithographs, and Legacy Collection provides a gorgeous setup for my kid’s upcoming Command Center room. I want to personally thank Brian Ward and Shout! Factory for bringing my favorite show into a tangible product that I can share with my kids and nephews. The Power Rangers Legacy Collection and individual Mega Sets are truly wonderful products made for the fans.
