It’s no surprise that Bandai America has a beautiful setup for their upcoming Power Rangers Super Megaforce and Power Rangers 20th Anniversary Legacy line.  This was my first trip to the New York Toy Fair and I must admit that the Bandai Booth immediately made up for the trip.  The nice team of Bandai allowed me to film the live tour and spend over an hour taking photos.

Legacy Titanus

Bandai’s Booth had a corner dedicated to the Legacy line, which consists of Green/White Ranger Legacy Morpher, Dragonzord, Dragon Dagger, and a new treat: Legacy Titanus.  One of the best highlights at Bandai Booth is the sexy Titanus zord!  Photos can’t capture how beautiful this zord looks in person.  Legacy Titanus is priced at $199.99 and will release later this year.  Let’s bring them together…Legacy Ultrazord!

Bandai also had Legacy Red and White Ranger action figures.  The packaging utilizes the traditional Legacy style with placeholder content.  According to the Bandai Rep, the figures will be releasing in the upcoming months.  In my personal opinion, the Super Megaforce 5″ Figures have a better quality bar than the Legacy figures shown at the booth.  It may be possible that the two figures were prototypes.

Power Rangers Super Megaforce

Bandai presented a majority of the Power Rangers Super Megaforce toyline, including the upcoming toys that were previously seen at the Nuremberg Toy Fair.  Fall Cycles, Q-Rex Megazord, 5″ Figures, Silver Morpher, Silver Spear, and Silver Ranger Training Set are only a few of the new items.

Bandai’s Ranger Key Contests

Inspired by March Madness, Bandai will be hosting their first contest next month. The winner will have a chance to win the 24K Legendary Morpher with 5 special Ranger Keys based on the 5 Rangers that win the Morphin Madness.  For more information, check out the following video that we filmed at New York Toy Fair.

In the fall, Bandai and Saban Brands will be hosting a contest with heavy focus on the Ranger Keys and the Power Rangers Scanner App.  Using your smart device and the Power Rangers Scanner App, scan any Ranger Key in the Bandai Super Megaforce Toy Line. Fans can instantly win Power Rangers Super Megaforce prizes.  The grand prize will be a chance to appear on an upcoming episode of Power Rangers TV Show!  The contest will start on August 1st and end on December 31st.

Ranger Keys

There will be 60 different Ranger Keys sold in retail products, such as the Legendary Ranger Key Packs, Role Play, and Zord Builder products.  You can collect all of the retail Ranger Keys by only purchasing the Key Packs.  This number was heavily emphasized at the Booth, but I feel like it is the minimal count because this doesn’t accommodate the current Red Alien Ranger and the upcoming Red Female Samurai Ranger keys.  Red Alien Ranger key could be included in a Mighty Morphin Alien Ranger Key Pack.  We may be seeing Convention-specific Keys at upcoming events, such as San Diego Comic Con and Power Morphicon.

According to Bandai, the decision to focus on “3 Rangers per team” is to highlight on the Rangers that define the season.  Personally, I am baffled by this because it either means that they are pushing more “boy” products over girls or they feel that the chosen Rangers take precedence over sixth Rangers.  For key collectors, this is upsetting because we would rather have a Complete Season team rather than 3 male Rangers (with the exception of PRNS, PRZ, and PRS with a single female key).

Another topic of discussion: Blind Packs.  I asked the Bandai Rep about the Blind Packs and how they would fit into the 60 key count.  He replied that there are no blind packs.  Bandai will be releasing Single Key Packs under light distribution.  Collectors will be able to purchase the single key packs and know which key is included, unlike the mystery of the Blind Packs.  These packs will not have any new keys.  In my opinion, I don’t see the point of the single key pack distribution unless you are only looking for a specific Ranger.  The Single Key Packs will release later this year.  I am willing to bet that these packs will either be drugstore (CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid…etc) or international exclusives.

Sky Ship Showdown

The Sky Ship Showdown (05646) set comes with the beautiful Sky Ship with Red Ranger and Damaras and his vehicle.  The concept of this set resembles the Vrak vs Red Ranger sets from the Power Rangers Megaforce line.  The details in the Sky Ship are truly appreciated with the block construction, sail material and design, and paint work.  The size of the Sky Ship is another plus for this product.  Sky Ship Showdown will release in the Fall.

Super Megaforce Collector Pack

The Power Rangers Super Megaforce Collector Pack (05699) is the first Collector Pack releasing in 2014. This set includes different variants of the five primary Super Megaforce Power Rangers, a display stand, and a Power Rangers Super Megaforce background. Red, Blue, and Pink Super Megaforce Rangers are standard figures, while Green and Yellow Rangers are transparent figures.

Zords

The first wave of zords will include the Wild Force Lion Zord with Wild Force Red Ranger figure, Super Megaforce Jet with Blue Ranger, and Super Megaforce Wheeler with Green Ranger. The zords are stored in the new tube packaging.

Megazords

The first wave of Megazords (Legendary, Q-Rex, and Ultimate Legendary) released last week at Toys R Us stores. The new Megazords are smaller size and don’t include the figure. This allows the product to be more affordable and build friendly for the younger audience.

Air Gliders

The Air Gliders allow a new method of playing by attaching any of the new Power Rangers Super Megaforce Mega Bloks figures to the foam glider and send it flying. Red, Blue, and Damaras Gliders will be releasing in the Spring.

Hero Pack

The Blue and Red Hero Packs (05649) were the first product that caught my eye with the awesome Helms (wheels) that are included with the figure. We may be seeing more Hero Packs in the fall.

Series 2 Figures

Transparent Silver Ranger, Transparent Blue Ranger, Damaged Red Ranger, Green Ranger, Pink Ranger, X Borg, Mystic Force Red Ranger, and Lost Galaxy Red Ranger are included in this set. The Transparent Blue Ranger is the Ultra Rare figure. In my opinion, it should’ve been Silver Ranger, but I’m not going to complain that it’ll be easier to get the Silver Ranger figure.

BANDAI UNLOCKS THE POWER OF ALL-NEW  POWER RANGERS SUPER MEGAFORCE TOY LINE

Super Mega action and adventure morphs onto television screens and retail shelves this month with the season premiere of Saban’s Power Rangers Super Megaforce, and the all-new Bandai toy line is the key to all of the fun! Power Rangers Super Megaforce just launched February 15^th on Nickelodeon, and Bandai is currently unveiling the full toy line for the season at New York Toy Fair.

Bandai is bringing the Power Rangers action from “show to shelf” with its new toy line which includes dozens of items from show-accurate role play toys to robust action figures to large-scale buildable robots, and much more. The collectible Legendary Ranger Keys ($7.99 SRP per three pack), which unlock the powers of ALL past Rangers, are central to the new Bandai toy line. A quick flip function morphs the figures into unique keys that can be inserted into multiple Super Megaforce toys to unlock special features and powers! With over 60 different Ranger Keys to collect, this innovative toy enhances kids’ play with all new Power Rangers items in the role play and Zord Builder categories.

The Ranger Keys also offer digital action: using the Power Rangers Scanner app (available on both iOS and Android systems) on any smart phone or tablet, kids can scan any Ranger Key, morph themselves into that Power Ranger and tap, slash and battle villains on-screen.

Disguises.COM has updated their site with Power Rangers Super Megaforce products.  The first wave of outfits include Red, Blue, and Pink Rangers.  The site will have Silver Ranger costume later this year.  The current gear includes: Gloves, Soft Swords, Super Megaforce Sword, Super Megaforce Blaster, and the Morpher.  I will be ordering Pink and Silver Ranger suits for my kids.

Super Megaforce is a Pirate-themed continuation of the Megaforce season. To combat the greater threats, the Rangers receive special morphers that allow them to gain access to the powers, weapons, Zords and Megazords of all the different Ranger teams of the past 20 years. This season is full of super-sized villains and powers that can only be handled by the Super Megaforce!

Packaging

The Power Rangers Turbo Box Art is the same as the Power Rangers Zeo to Lost Galaxy Box Set version.  The primary difference between the two boxes is the “Volume 1″ text on the bottom of the cover. The back of the box promotes the first 23 episodes.  The first two discs have 9 episodes per disc and final disc only has five episodes.

DVD Menus

The Power Rangers Turbo Volume 1 DVD Menu is the same version used in the Box Set’s version. This menu starts with a quick Power Rangers Turbo logo animation followed by a 3d rendering of the Power Chamber.  Power Rangers Turbo clips are shown in Dimitria’s tube  The secondary menu lacks inspiration with the font and accent color usage. This menu was designed last year and had plenty of time for a minor tweaks on the menu.

Here is a clip of the DVD Menu from the Power Rangers Turbo to Lost Galaxy Box Set. Shout! Factory has given permission to upload a video of the menu. Fans are not allowed to upload any video content (clips, episodes, and bonus features) from the actual DVDs.

Episodes

The first 23 episodes of Power Rangers Turbo are included in the first volume. Chapter Markers are embedded in the episodes at the Opening Theme, commercial breaks, and the Ending Theme. The classic bloopers are included in the ending theme. The episode ends with the new Saban Brands animation, which is seen on all Saban Brands DVDs by Shout! Factory.

Power Rangers Turbo is not a well received season in the Power Rangers online community.  The season does have a few great moments and a nice transition into one of the most popular seasons: Power Rangers in Space.  Power Rangers Turbo starts with the three-parter that bids goodbye to Zordon, Alpha 5, and Rocky, while introducing Dimitria and Alpha 6.  The first episode has a great montage to illustrate the events from Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.  Tommy, Adam, Kat, and Tanya graduate from high school and begin their new lives in the workplace.  Justin starts his new life in Angel Grove High.  Bulk and Skull are transformed into chimps as they continue to provide comical charm to the Power Rangers episodes.

Near the end of the DVD Volume, the Rangers transfer their powers to four teenagers who will join Justin in protecting the planet Earth from Divatox and her minions.

One personal rant is the final episode has the Phantom Ranger.  This episode should’ve been placed on Volume 2 to allow a fresh start with Phantom Ranger’s arc.  The Phantom Ranger had a nice story arc that introduces the character, new zords, and a love interest (with Cassie).  This volume only has the first episode, which shows the brief introduction episode of the Phantom Ranger.

Pack

Each pack includes a figure, weapon, Super Mega Cannon part, and a Series 1 product sheet.  The Secret Rare is currently unknown but the silhouette shows a Ranger with a Super Mega Saber.  This could be a variant of one of the other Rangers, Pink Ranger, or possibly the Silver Ranger.  Secret Rares are always a pain to find because Mega Bloks figures rarity are random based on each figure’s rarity rather than a consistent rarity system per box (as seen in the Power Rangers Mini Figures packs).

New License with Saban Brands Will Power Up Dozens of Electronics,  Musical Instruments, Mobile and Gaming Accessories for the Iconic Franchise

Sakar International today announced a new licensing deal with Saban Brands  that will deliver a new super charged lineup of Power Rangers electronics,  adventure gear, audio products, mobile accessories and more for the No. 1 boys  live-action series currently airing its 21st season.

Sakar announced the new deal covering every product category at the 111th  Annual Toy Industry Association’s International Toy Fair® 2014 in New York.  The  company expects products to hit store shelves in the U.S., Canada and Mexico for  fourth quarter 2014 ahead of the debut of the series’ all-new 2015 season.

Saban Brands continues the tradition of utilizing the word “Super” for their second seasons.  They have filed the trademark for Power Rangers Dino Supercharge. One thing to keep in mind is that Saban Brands doesn’t always use all of their trademarks.  This could be a placeholder name for the 2016 season.  Special thanks to our friend, @TSilentWatcher (Twitter) for the find.

With the new Air Gliders, Mega Bloks introduces a new play mode in the Power Rangers Super Megaforce toyline.  The new Mega Bloks figures can be attached to any of the new Air Gliders.  The Spring Line includes the following Air Gliders: Super Megaforce Red Ranger, Super Megaforce Blue Ranger, Super Megaforce Green Ranger, Damaras, Blue Ranger, and Black Ranger.

Product Description

Packaging

The Air Glider packaging utilizes a new packaging concept for Mega Blok’s 2014 toyline with the color schema used in Power Rangers Super Megaforce Bandai packaging.  The top of the box has a great stock photo of the Super Mega Rangers.  The back of the box promotes the Air Glider and the new Megazords.

Glider

The glider is composed of a lightweight, foam material with a few plastic components for holding the Mega Bloks figure. The figure can attach to the glider by place the hands on the handles or connecting the glider’s peg into the hole in the figure’s upper back.

The glider comes with a Power Rangers Super Megaforce figure and weapon. I prefer the Super Mega Blade that came with the Glider’s figure in comparison to the Series 1 versions. It’s no surprise that I’m not a fan of the gray matte finish used on Mega Bloks and Bandai America weapons. The color of this blade looks fantastic with the figure and the Super Mega Cannon (built from the Series 1 figures). All Power Rangers Mega Bloks in the 2014 toyline will have the hole in the upper back area for Glider support.

Wait a second, this isn’t a Power Rangers Super Megaforce toy.  Use your IMAGINATION!  That’s right, I went there.  I just got my order of the ToQChanger and Red Vinyl Figure.  This was the first time that I ordered a Sentai product during the season.  Mobirates and Gokaiger Key Pack are the only Sentai toys that I owned before the ToQChanger.  I’ve always heard about Bandai Japan’s quality products and wanted to try something new for our readers.  Enjoy the photos and my mini-review.

Product Description

The Ressha Sentai have arrived at the station! To transform into the ToQgers, each member uses the ToQChanger, along with their respective Ressha to transform into ToQ 1Gou through 5Gou! Slide the Ressha into the changer to activate the device, and press a corresponding button to start! The first button activates the change, the second button will activate a Norikae Change, and the third button summons the Ressha. During the Norikae Change, remove the current Ressha and insert a new Ressha to change into a new color. The device is capable of reading every Ressha, so build your collection to change into cool new forms, or summon brand new Ressha!

I ordered the ToqChanger and Figure at CSToys International.  This was my first time ordering from them and I must say that it was a delightful process.  I want to personally thank @SoddersLiger (Twitter) for giving me the heads up about the online store.  I was informed that CSToys provides the best prices and the toys sell out fairly quick.  A few weeks ago, I was heading to New York Toy Fair and arrived to the connecting airport at approximately 5am.  I immediately signed into the site using my mobile device and was able to order the products within a few minutes.  The mobile version of the site was very easy to navigate.  Within a few days, I got shipping confirmation in addition to a Youtube link showing my products been packaged.  I’ve purchased products from several online stores in the past decade, but I am very impressed at the awesome customer service provided by CSToys International.  The order arrived yesterday with USPS Registered Mail.  I highly recommend keeping an eye on their website for the latest activations and get your alarm clocks ready for Sunday morning.

The ToQChanger is a fantastic product with a nice weight, adjustable straps, and a high volume.  Two AAA batteries are required and not included with the Changer.

Ressha

Cards, Keys, Batteries, and now Trains (Ressha).  One Ressha is included with the Changer, but it is highly recommended to get multiple resshas to take full advantage of the Changer usage and sounds.

Cover

The cover shows the first sign of the vintage artistic style used throughout the issue.  I’m pleased that artist took this approach to provide appropriate homage to the comics that released twenty years ago.  The composition of the cover feels appropriate with the consistent morph pattern (middle-right-left).  Papercutz is well-known for making full panel pages that would make great posters.

Profiles

The first page is a letter from Jim Salicrup (Editor in Chief) welcoming the audience to Free Comic Book Day and introducing them to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers graphic novel.  Jim states that the novel is about the events that took place after Mighty Morphin Power Rangers “White Light” episodes.  RangerCrew is also credited on this page.  After the letter page, Papercutz has a page dedicated to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show summary with two images of the Command Center and the Power Rangers. The next pages are dedicated to the primary characters (minus Zordon, Alpha, and villains) of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  Each character profile follows the same concept used in Papercutz’s Power Rangers graphic novels.  Tommy’s profile show two “Green Ranger” related images.  These images should be White Ranger focus to match the novel and profile page’s title.  The page also shows a Megazord image instead of a White Tigerzord. Bulk and Skull’s profile is a fun page with Weapon defined as Bullying and Zord defined as “They don’t know what that is.”

By Bug Betrayed

The title page shows the six teenagers, including Tommy in his new white outfit, in the Rad Bug.  The page hints that the novel’s events take place after the White Light mini-series.  The title page also mentions the Scarlet Sentinel, White Ranger as the new leader, and Rita Repulsa back in the dumpster as nods to the White Light episodes.  The Rad Bug vehicle was only used in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1.  The vehicle was a great way to incorporate conversations during long distance transportation rather than the quick teleportation means.  Most of the character renderings are the expected representation of the MMPR Season 2 characters.  Zack is sporting his Season 2 hair style.  The outfits are very similar, but not exact, to their clothing from the actual episodes.

The conversation concept works out nicely with more nods to Angela, Bulk, and Spike (intended to be Skull). Rita has a few dialogues during the conversation.  These nods should the appropriate details that an anniversary product should show.  The same expectation goes for the actual show, but we only get to see Gokaiger (Super Sentai) content with past season and a few morph calls.  Graphic novels have more flexibility in story telling and this is immediately noticed in the first few pages.

The scene cuts to Lord Zedd’s lair, which has an odd representation of a viewing screen.  The first two panels in the page are near identical.  The second panel could’ve been split into two focusing on the two conversation bubbles (Radbug and Squatt).  The villain renderings turned out pretty good.

Lord Zedd finds a way to really mess with the Rangers by going after the Rad Bug. This page is a real turning point by giving true focus to the Rad Bug, which was one of my favorite vehicles in the early seasons. At first, the Rangers are startled and think that Rita (still in the trunk) is responsible. The vehicle develops the typical monster personality and starts communicating with the Rangers. The opening line with “Rainbow Rangers” was hilarious. Zordon informs the Rangers about Lord Zedd’s plot. One subtle attention that I liked was Billy’s reaction to his prized possession.

The Rangers morph into action with the old school morph screen. Tommy says “White Tiger Tigerzord!” rather than the simple “Tigerzord” phrase. The morph sequence is also out of order. After the morph, we get a group shot of Power Rangers.

The Rangers fires blasts from their weapons towards the wheels. They should’ve been using their Blade Blasters rather than the Power Weapons. The following panel mentions the Blade Blasters but the panel showed that the blasts were emitted from their weapons. Rita continues with her rants from the dumpster. I’m not a fan of the dialogue in the following panel when Saba refers to Billy as “Blue” rather than “Blue Ranger” and White Ranger uses “My Saber, Saba” rather than the simple Saba. Saba can be comical at times, but he appears to be formal and respective to the Rangers. White Ranger has never addressed Saba as his personal weapon.

The Rangers work together and use their weapons to slow down the vehicle. The plan works and flips Rad Bug on its back with a nice joke in its favor. Pink Ranger praises the White Ranger, who acknowledges that they are a team. Lordd Zedd makes Billy’s Rad Bug grow for round two. Rad Bug is now bigger than ever and with bigger puns. I said bigger, not better. The continued usage of the vehicle’s puns follows the traditional monster dialogue.

The Rangers summon their zords, which Red Ranger uses the term “Dinosaur Power.” The Firebird Thunderzord has a strong pink color. The panel with the Thunderzords is beautiful, which is no surprise from Papercutz’s past works with the zord fights.

My favorite page is when the Tigerzord transforms into Warrior Mode and wait for it…rides the Rad Bug. It doesn’t get any better than that. A zord riding Billy’s car is an awesome way to utilize the car.

The Thunderzords (named Dinozords in the novel) combine and form the Thunder Megazord. The panels use a LED-like font to resemble the Megazord’s computerized dialogue. The renderings of the Red Dragon (Warrior Mode) and Thunder Megazord are both amazing. The pink color from the Firebird that give a different tone that feels odd, but decent to represent the Pink Ranger’s zord.

Thunder Megazord leaps in front of Rad Bug and attempts to slow it down. The action strokes use around the Rad Bug work nicely to highlight the moving vehicle. Just as they think that they’ve won, the Rangers watch as the Rad Bug reveal its monster mode. The Megazord fight is quick, but entertaining as The Thunder Megazord rides the Tigerzord. Unlike the traditional Megazord finishers, the Thunder Megazord takes a page out of the mechanic’s book to restore the car back to normal.

In the final scene, the guys teleport Rita back into space (as seen at the end of White Light Part 2). Kimberly also mentions that she and Trini need to get back to Bulk’ garage, which also occurred in the episode. The issue provided the appropriate integration of the events that may have taken place in a fun, playful manner. I prefer this approach rather than a direct copy of an episode or original content.

Errors

This issue does have a few typos and errors, but the overall product is fairly solid for a free comic book.  We have reported the issues to Papercutz and will be providing fan consulting in future issues.
